Summary
The participation of women in sports has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few decades. Sponsorships and visibility have grown, as has the number of female athletes and teams across a wide variety of sports. One McKinsey study has found that between 2022 and 2024, revenue from women’s sports grew 4.5 times faster than that of men’s sports in the US. But significant challenges remain. The pay gap between male and female athletes has yet to be bridged, with men earning much more in contracts, tournament prize monies and sponsorship deals. Investment and funding for women's sports remain far behind that for men, impacting many aspects from infrastructure to the development of athletes. Women and girls also face more obstacles to training, often seeing practice facilities prioritise the needs of men's and boys' teams, or making do with equipment less suitable for women's bodies. Experts say much remains to be done to make sport truly equal and accessible to all.
