[Post 1147] Retailers, importers warn beverage container recycling scheme may push up drink prices

Summary

Prices of bottled and canned drinks in Singapore could soon rise as much as between 25 cents and 60 cents, when the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) kicks in from April. That's according to some major importers and small retailers, who said they will struggle with multiple fees. For example, importers will have to stick on new, BCRS-approved labels on each and every bottle or can. BCRS said it has organised online workshops to educate producers about the scheme. Meanwhile, Singapore's household recycling rate in 2024 fell to a record low of 11%. Claudia Lim reports.
