[Post 1237] Stop Doing This In Japan: Tourist Habits That Drive Locals Crazy

Summary

Overtourism in Japan is triggering rare public pushback in hotspots like Tokyo, Kyoto and Kamakura. A cherry blossom festival near Mt Fuji has been cancelled this year, after residents complained of disruption. Crowds at Kamakura’s "Slam Dunk” crossing are clogging roads and public transport. In Kyoto and Tokyo, some restaurants are turning tourists away as frustration builds.

Even as Japan welcomes record visitor numbers, residents say maintaining social norms and daily routines have become increasingly difficult. A recent survey found 61 per cent of locals in major destinations want tougher action on tourist behaviour.
