[Post 1273] Singapore’s Sole Caregivers Under 24/7 Pressure | On The Red Dot: Left To Care - Part 1

Summary

Coco wakes up at 2am daily to care for her wheelchair-bound husband, even as her own heart condition and dialysis treatments weaken her. For years, she has been the caregiver. Now, she must confront the uncomfortable reality of needing one herself. Mabel is a single mother to 3 boys, including five-year-old Benedict who has a rare genetic disorder and depends on a ventilator to survive. As she returns to the office for the first time since Benedict was brought home at 4 months-old, she must trust others to handle emergencies that can turn critical in seconds.

Stacey has been her family’s breadwinner since she was about 20. Today, she juggles work while monitoring her elderly parents through CCTV, never fully able to switch off from the fear that something could go wrong. And Imran checks his phone habitually to keep watch over his mother with dementia from his workplace, fearing she could walk out of the house at any moment. For these sole caregivers, love means having to be on duty 24/7.
