[Post 1172] Japan's Surprising Digital Lag: Why Is It So Weak To Cyberattacks? | Insight

Summary

In December 2024, Japan Airlines was hit by a cyberattack that delayed numerous flights. This follows another breach in 2023 that shut down the country's largest port for over 48 hours.

For a country with a reputation for high-tech innovations, Japan is surprisingly lagging in digital transformation. In 2024, it ranked 31st in digital competitiveness, behind most advanced economies. The government only scrapped the use of floppy disks as a mandatory storage device in July 2024. Famously, a former Minister for cybersecurity admitted he had never used a computer. From business to defence cooperation, weak cyber safeguards are a liability for the world's fourth-largest economy.

Now, being behind the curve could catch up to Japan, as it increasingly becomes a target for cyberattacks. What is behind Japan's slow digital transformation, and can it play catch up on cybersecurity?
